- Weather may deteriorate at your alternate. If conditions at your alternate worsen while you are holding, the fuel margin required to divert there effectively increases, cutting into your available holding time.
- Holding fuel burn can be higher than cruise burn. At holding speeds, particularly if you are flying power-off descents or managing turbulence, your actual consumption rate may differ from your cruise planning figure. Use a conservative estimate.
- Declaring an emergency is always an option. No regulation requires a pilot to exhaust fuel reserves before declaring an emergency.
