What Are Clearing Turns?
A clearing turn is a deliberate, coordinated turn — or series of turns — performed before beginning any practice maneuver in order to visually scan the surrounding airspace for other aircraft, obstacles, or airspace boundaries. The goal is simple: confirm that the area is clear of conflicts before the pilot's attention shifts from traffic avoidance to the mechanics of a maneuver. Although the FAA does not specify a single rigid procedure in regulation, the Airplane Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-3) and the Aviation Instructor's Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9) both treat clearing turns as a fundamental, non-negotiable safety discipline that every instructor must build into every student's habit patterns from the very first lesson.
Why Clearing Turns Are Required
Practice maneuvers — steep turns, stalls, slow flight, lazy eights, chandelles, and ground reference maneuvers — share two characteristics that create collision risk. First, they are performed at relatively low altitudes (often between 1,500 and 3,000 feet AGL), which is the same altitude band used by other VFR traffic, crop dusters, gliders, and parachutists. Second, they demand divided attention: the pilot is simultaneously managing pitch, bank, power, coordination, and reference points. During a power-off stall, for example, the nose is high and forward visibility is severely restricted. During a steep turn, the pilot is looking across the wing and through the windscreen at a constantly moving horizon. In both cases, the ability to detect approaching traffic is sharply degraded.
The Airplane Flying Handbook explicitly states that the pilot should execute clearing turns before beginning any practice maneuver and that a minimum of 180° of turn in each direction (or a full 360° turn) should be completed to adequately scan all quadrants. The purpose is not a formality — mid-air collisions are lethal, and the vast majority occur in clear-weather conditions precisely because VFR pilots assume they will see and avoid traffic without a structured scan.
Recommended Procedures
The 90-90 Method
The most commonly taught procedure is two 90° turns in opposite directions, producing a total of 180° of scanning in each direction. The pilot turns 90° to the left (or right), pauses momentarily to scan, then turns 90° in the opposite direction, pauses, and scans again. This covers the area ahead, to each side, and partially behind the aircraft. The pause at the completion of each turn is important: the eyes need a moment of stability to detect movement against a background, because a moving observer scanning a moving background can miss a stationary (or slowly-closing) target.
The 180° Single Turn or 360° Full Circle
Some instructors prefer a single, continuous 180° turn followed by a rollout on the original heading, or a full 360° circle. A 360° clearing turn is particularly thorough because it exposes every quadrant of airspace, including the area directly behind and below the aircraft — sectors frequently missed in a quick left-right scan. The trade-off is that a 360° turn at a standard bank angle of 30° takes roughly 2 minutes to complete at typical training speeds, and during that time the aircraft drifts from its original position. Neither approach is wrong; what matters is that the scan is deliberate and comprehensive.
Bank Angle During Clearing Turns
Clearing turns are typically performed at a shallow to medium bank angle — approximately 30° or less. This is intentional. A shallower bank keeps the nose closer to the horizon, making it easier to see traffic at or near the aircraft's altitude. Steep banks tilt the wing toward the ground and create blind spots directly below the turn. Additionally, performing clearing turns in a steep bank would itself be a maneuver requiring divided attention — defeating the purpose of the clearing turn. Slow flight or an unusual attitude during the clearing turn could also mask a developing problem.
Altitude and Airspace Check
A clearing turn is not just a traffic scan — it is an opportunity to verify the entire operating environment. Before rolling into the first clearing turn, the pilot should confirm: (1) sufficient altitude above the ground for the planned maneuver and recovery (at minimum, compliance with 14 CFR 91.119, which requires 500 feet from any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure over non-congested areas and, over congested areas, 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft — but training maneuvers are typically conducted at least 1,500 feet AGL and often 3,000 feet AGL for stall/spin work); (2) proximity to restricted, prohibited, or special-use airspace; (3) distance from clouds (under 14 CFR 91.155, in Class E airspace and in Class G airspace above 1,200 feet AGL, at least 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontally; different minimums apply in Class G at or below 1,200 feet AGL, where daytime operations require only remaining clear of clouds); and (4) location relative to airports, traffic patterns, and known congested areas.
Teaching Clearing Turns: The CFI Perspective
From an instructional standpoint, clearing turns serve a purpose beyond collision avoidance — they establish a professional habit pattern. The Aviation Instructor's Handbook emphasizes that instructors must model correct behaviors consistently, because students absorb not just the briefed procedure but the instructor's actual behavior in the cockpit. An instructor who skips clearing turns under time pressure or who performs a cursory glance and calls it a clearing turn is silently teaching the student that the procedure is optional. This is one of the most dangerous habits a CFI can pass on.
When introducing clearing turns, the instructor should explain the why before the how. Students who understand that mid-air collisions overwhelmingly occur in VFR conditions, at low altitudes, near airports and training areas, are motivated to comply thoroughly rather than mechanically. The instructor should also demonstrate the head movement required during the turn: eyes should not be locked on the attitude indicator or the altimeter during a clearing turn — they must be actively sweeping the windscreen, side windows, and mirrors if installed.
Common Student Errors in Clearing Turns
- Rushing the turn: Students often perform a quick banking sweep and immediately begin the maneuver. The turn must be complete enough to expose all quadrants, and the pilot's eyes must actually follow the sweep.
- Looking only straight ahead: Traffic can approach from above, below, and from behind. A head-down cockpit glance or a straight-ahead stare defeats the purpose of the turn.
- Omitting clearing turns entirely: Under workload or distraction (especially on a busy training day), students may skip clearing turns. The instructor must reinforce from lesson one that this step is never optional.
- Performing clearing turns inside the traffic pattern: Pattern work has its own traffic scanning discipline (clearing turns are not flown inside an established pattern). Students must understand context — clearing turns apply to the practice area, not the airport environment.
- Not checking altitude during the turn: Some students fixate so completely on the outside scan that they allow altitude to drift significantly. A good clearing turn is coordinated and altitude-maintained, demonstrating that the two tasks — scan and aircraft control — can coexist.
The FAA Practical Test Standard Connection
The FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for the Private, Commercial, and Flight Instructor certificates explicitly list the performance of clearing turns as an element evaluated during checkride maneuvers. A designated pilot examiner (DPE) will observe whether the applicant performs clearing turns before each practice maneuver. Omitting them is a disqualifying error — it demonstrates insufficient risk management and can result in an unsatisfactory grade regardless of how well the subsequent maneuver is executed. For the CFI candidate specifically, failing to teach or demonstrate clearing turns reflects on the candidate's ability to instill safe habits in future students.

Common Test Traps
- Trap 1 — Minimum turn requirement: The FAA recommends at least 180° of clearing turns (as two 90° turns or a single 180°) before maneuvers. Some students confuse this with a 90° requirement or believe any quick scan is sufficient.
- Trap 2 — Clearing turns inside the traffic pattern: Test questions sometimes probe whether students know that clearing turns are for the practice area, not the airport traffic pattern, where standard pattern scanning procedures apply instead.
- Trap 3 — Regulatory vs. procedural: There is no specific FAR that mandates clearing turns by name, but the ACS evaluation criteria and the Airplane Flying Handbook treat them as required best practice. Students must understand they are operationally mandatory even without a numbered regulation.
- Trap 4 — Bank angle confusion: Clearing turns use shallow-to-medium bank (approximately 30°), NOT steep bank. Steep banks are maneuvers themselves and reduce the ability to scan effectively.
- Trap 5 — CFI responsibility: On CFI knowledge test questions, the examiner may ask which errors the instructor should correct first. Omitting clearing turns is always a priority correction because it is a safety-of-flight issue, not merely a technique deficiency.
