When a drone pilot studies airspace, the emphasis often falls on the colorful concentric circles of Class B, C, D, and E airspace on a sectional chart. But there is a less obvious boundary that catches many Part 107 candidates off guard: the Mode C Veil. This invisible 30-nautical-mile ring surrounds every primary Class B airport in the United States, and it carries its own set of equipment requirements and operational considerations that directly affect unmanned aircraft system (UAS) pilots.
